Scattered

Each day I got so many things I’d like to do.

And I start oh so many projects.

But the time in a day is obviously finite. And there’s no way I can squeeze everything in a single day.

Heck, some days I think there’s no way I can squeeze everything in a single lifetime.

I’m sure you can relate. I’m sure you feel the same way. And I’m pretty sure you’re behaving the same way.

And that’s a big stinking problem.

All you’re doing is laying a single brick in a million different houses, and expecting that one day it will magically become a mansion.

It’s not gonna happen.

None of it adds up to anything.

You are scattered.

Ouch.

That hurt.

At least it hurt me like a million misplaced bricks dropping right on my head when I heard about it in this struthless video recently.

I’m not new to the idea. But there’s something about that “bricks in a million different houses” analogy that makes the problem so blatantly evident.

Here’s another vivid illustration (h/t Casey Neistat):

You can do 10 things to the first degree, and that’s how well you’ll do all 10 things.

Or you can do 1 thing to the 10th degree. And look how much better you do that.

Ok, so that’s what’s wrong. Great. How do we fix that?

Start laying bricks of the same house every single day.

Make it your objective each day to add another brick to your house.

This is true for work. It’s true for dating. Friendships. Everything.

Really focusing and investing yourself in something you’re passionate about will always give you better results than scattering yourself around and spreading yourself thin.

“But I got a million different interests!”

Just pick one. Pick the one you like the most.

Don’t make it the biggest decision ever. You’re not getting married. You’ll have all the time to pursue other interests in the future if you want to. But if you never start, you will never find the thing that you’re looking for.

So commit yourself to ONE right now and really focus and dedicate yourself to it for at least a month.

No more zero days on it.

Remember: FOCUS > SCATTERED

Now go do your magic.
